This or That Thursday

This week’s edition of This or That is about communication. Today there are so many ways to communicate with one another. Which way do you prefer to keep in touch with your family, friends, and acquaintances (other than face to face)?
Text message or email or telephone?

I’m not the most efficient texter. It will take me six minutes to write six words on the cell phone. So that is obviously not my first choice. I do love talking on the phone, but with three children around needing my attention, sometimes those calls get cut short. It seems as soon as I answer the phone my boys are wrestling, my daughter’s hair is caught in a fishing lure, or there is sticky orange juice seeping from a strange place. So I suppose my pick is email, because of the convenience. The note can be as long or short as you want and can be sent at any time of day.
And if you are wondering about the fishing lure thing, last week my daughter was yelling for my help from upstairs when I was on the phone. My youngest son’s room is decorated in a fishing theme, so I have fake fishing lures on the wall. As I scurried into his room, she was pinned to the wall, because her hair was stuck to a lure. Yep, she’s quite the catch.
Of course now there are message boards, Facebook, Myspace, and blogs to keep track of people. The main ways of communicating still seem to be the following three ways: telephone/cell phone, email, and texting. What is your pick?
Don’t forget to comment and/or vote on the poll to the right!

My agent blogged about this very topic today: Rachelle Gardner's Rants and Ramblings.

Great minds must think alike.

I use FB (which is new to me) to connect with family, my son at UofO, his girlfriend, our relatives in Denmark, etc.

And, quite the catch - :) that was good.

I tend to use Facebook and Email, I guess because of the time factor. I have some friends that once you get them on the phone, you can't get off for at least an hour...oi.

I pretty much suck at communicating with people. I hate the phone, rarely write (or receive) emails. And I spend 90% of my time at work or at home.

Plenty of seating at my funeral. (Not that I'll care by that point.)

My cousins (literally by the dozens) and I have a yahoo group. We are spread all over the country, but yahoo allows us to have ongoing conversations. We try to get together at least once a year. When we do, it's like we just saw each other.

I've got instant messaging blocked on my computer. It seemed like every time I got online someone popped up to talk to me. I couldn't get anything done.

I'm on Facebook, but I don't like it much. I prefer email. That way I can answer when I'm ready to respond and end the conversation when I'm done.

Wow. I just re-read my entry. I sound like a curmudgeon!

My favorite method is face-to-face...my four siblings (and their spouses and kids) and parents live one hour away...a couple times/mth, I drive down there, sit my hiney on my mom's couch and talk, talk, talk (with lots of laughing and eating in between).

My daughter got a fish hook stuck in her ear last summer. Not fun at all...but an interesting story for her to share with friends.

I use Email and text...I have to answer the phone at work, so I hate to answer it at home...grin...

My five kids have often been used as fishing lures.

I've got a good story about a guy with a big fishing hook perfectly in and out of his eyeball. Have to tell you some time.

I vote for email.

Kim-I'm going to check out her blog! Thanks!
Angela-I know, I just don't have the time to talk for hours!
Murph-Well, then I am certainly impressed by your effort of commenting!
Nora- I love that your family has a Yahoo group. I keep in touch with some of the family on Facebook. I love when my hubby's teenage cousins want to chat with an old lady like me!
Anita-Ouch!
Brenda-I don't blame you for not wanting to use the phone at home, too!
Douglas- My husband teases my kids that he'll use them or our dog as musky bait :0)
V- Oh, man. That sounds brutal!

Sorry, but that's hilarious about your daughter getting caught in the fishing lure. :)

I'd like to say that I prefer writing letters, but technology has gotten the best of me. I think FB is my best way to keep in touch with people I care about. It's just easy.

I'd have to say email, from those choices. I'm not a phone person and I don't text. I live in the stoneage, I guess. I do use IM a lot, even with my husband sometimes. :)

Oooh. Good topic for the 21st century. Since I've had a blackberry for a while, email and texting are pretty commonplace. Although I do like old fashioned face-to-face communication too. I'm an ENTJ, which means I get energy from being with people.

I'm with you on email for the same reasons. Plus, with email, the words can be read over and over again.
