I'm a Twit!

Oh, yes I am. I decided to join the timesucking world of Twitter last week! I am having fun with it so far. I have found some of you on Twitter, but if I haven't let me know in the comments and I'll follow you! (And if you want, you can, um, follow me @kellypolark!)

Because behind this glossy exterior, I am a bit of a geek (don't all nod your heads at once), I still don't know my way around Twitter. I need my dear blog friends to show me the way.

First, check out Laura Pauling's funny posts about Twitter here and here.

Also, Debbie Ridpath Ohi has very useful information about Writers who use Twitter. Check her site here if you are in the dark like me!

Second, my questions (there's no such thing as a dumb question, right? RIGHT?!).

1. Okay, what does RT stand for and when do you use it?

2. If you retweet, how do you write something with the retweet to post at the same time?

3. How do you post an http link but not make it so freaking long?

4. Hashtags. Can you just make them up? Are they real links to something?
Hi. I'm Kelly. #I don't know what the heck I'm doing.

5. Are there any Twitter etiquette tips I need to know?

6. How do you post a photo to Twitter and have a short link for it?
7. How do you put the retweet sign at the end of a post?

THANKS for your help, peoples! I think once I get this thing down, I'll be having me some fun times on Twitter!

Wish I could help, but I'm not on it. DOn't think I ever will be ... I find it all kinda ... well, just 'kinda'. :o)

If you didn't put everything on Tweedeck yet-- you need to PRONTO! That way you see everything happening in real time.

You can RT (Re-Tweet) easily and edit others RT's with your own words (it will prompt you to).

Also start putting people into different "groups" (writers, friends, etc.) and then you can see the different columns of people/groups on Tweetdeck.

If you need any help, just email me!

Jessica- That's how I did feel, but I don't want to miss anything! :)
Christina- Thank you! I'm off to check out Tweetdeck!

Welcome! I'll find you on Twitter later. I can answer 2 questions. Yes, you can make hashtags up to be funny. But if you click on #amwriting or #yalitchat or #askagent you'll go to all those posts even if you're not following the people. So the hashtag is also a tool.

And you can go to and shorten a link, or tweetdeck will do it automatically for you!

Good luck! And thanks for the links!

I'll have to learn from you because I don't tweet! (I can't decide if I ever will...)
Keep us informed about how it goes!

Kelly, I just saw this post in my google reader and thought of your post immediately. Check this out for some great twitter-related tips.

Cheers and see you on twitter: @iggiandgabi

See you on there. I'm a lurker, so I don't tweet because I quit. Time Suck!

Good Questions! At this point I am more of a lurker than an interact-er on Twitter. But this post and its comments may convince me to try Tweetdeck. Thanks for seeking advice! I am going to lurk here and reap the benefits.

I love Twitter! It looks like everyone answered your questions, so I'll just add that I think you'll love it. It's fun, informative, and not that bad of a time suck. At least I don't think so. Enjoy! I'm off to follow you! : )

I haven't been on Twitter in forever! But I'm making a mental note to follow you when I get home from work. And I know RT stands for re-tweet, but that's about all. :)

Lost...totally lost. I think I'm with Jessica! :-)

I usually share interesting "links" via twitter. Things I just feel I have to pass on ;) Big cyber mouth that I have

DEZMOND said...

I use Twitter just to promote my posts :) and I don't really get it generally, I'm mean the whole point of it. It just doesn't seem practical and well organized place to me. I prefer Facebook otherwise.

Thanks for the info, Laura!
Lydia - Will do!
Gabi- Thanks so much for the timely post link!
Stephanie - Will find you!!
Tina- As it is new, I'm into the tweeting, but may be a lurker at times....
Cynthia and Kimberly - Thank you and I'll find you too!
Shannon- I'm still slightly lost myself! ;)
Kim - YEs, lots of good linkage on Twitter I noticed.
Dezz- I'm still new so I'll have to see which I prefer. They are similar yet different.

I still have no idea what Tweetdeck is, and I've been on twitter for months now.

I borrowed Twitter for dummies and am still learning.

Here're the answers for the questions I don't think anyone answered.

2. You can only add something if you copied the post and put RT first. If you do it by pressing Retweet, you can't add anything.

3. Go to

4. Yes you can make anything up.

The rest were either answered or I don't know the answer. ;)

Stina! Ahhhh, thank you on all accounts!!!

Please post about it in about a it or hate it???!!!

Hiya Kelly! I made the leap into Twitter a few months back and found it to have a steeper learning curve than other social media apps. However, after getting through the frustrating part, it really is a fun way to connect to folks, and a great way to keep up with the industry. So, yes, there is an end!

On Verla Kay's boards, you'll find several threads that deal with some questions and answers about twitter. Folks are always so helpful at Verla's. No dumb questions. (I've already asked them!)

Here's a link to an etiquette twitter post that was floating around today:

I, too, recommend TweetDeck. Once you get the hang of it, it seems to make Twitter much more manageable.

Feel free to message me if I can help.

I'm on Twitter. I Teewt in spurts. Hashmarks are cool because you can post ... errrr ....Tweet to particular groups. Like #writegoal #blog #edit #movies #chucknorris etc. But I refuse to let Twitter be a timesuck for me.

Thank you, Tamara!

3Roses- I still need to do the Tweetdeck and I didn't even know that there was a new twitter!

I so cannot help you since I've yet to enter the time suck zone that is Twitter. Once you've got it figured out, please report back about how you like it. Or don't like it. I kinda hope you don't like it so I'll have more reason not to do it.

Susan Fields said...

I'm glad you're figuring this all out now. When I decide to take the plunge one of these days, I'll know who to come to with questions! :)

Rachele Alpine said...

Oh man....I keep thinking I want to do twitter, but I'm afraid that it might suck up even more of my time! You'll have to let us know how it goes! Great blog btw...I found it by accident today and really like it! :)

I'm going to assume with all these comments that questions have been asnwered, but if they haven't just email me and I'll help you out! I saw the tweet you sent me. It's going on 1:30 AM, so I'll check out the link and respond tomorrow! But thank you for thinking of me. I love that you'll share Jared with me ;)

So happy you're on Twitter now. I've been on a Twitter hiatus, but I'll be back soon.

Kelly H-Y said...

Too funny ... sorry, I can't help you ... I'm not a Twitter-er! :-)

Solvang Sherrie said...

Download Tweetdeck. It makes the whole Twitter thing SO much simpler (and automatically takes care of most of your questions)!

Sharon K. Mayhew said...

I'm no help...I'm a lurker...Some how (as if by magic) my book reviews or comments on goodreads show up on my home page on Twitter??? Magic? Like I said, I'm no help.

I'm following you on Twitter now. I don't do much with it but read some posts, put something on there about once a day, especially share when I have a new blog post. It can be enjoyable but very time consuming.
