What the Ophiuchus is Going on with the Zodiac?

The internet is abuzz with the recent changes in the zodiac. According to the media, a 13th sign, Ophiuchus, has been added that changes the dates of the astrology signs. Read more here.

I don't read my horoscope anymore, but I do believe I share many traits of the general characteristics for Cancer the Crab. Homebody? Check. Emotional? Check. Nurturing? Check. Protective of family? Big check. Strong willed? Check. Persistent? Check. Romantic? Okay, not really...but the majority of the traits I do identify with.

When I was young, I was very into astrology. I bought mini monthly horoscopes that were wrapped in a tube for 50 cents at Zayre. In junior high, my two best friends and I bought baseball t-shirts with our astrology sign on the front and our name in fuzzy letters on the back (which resulted in a fight with them because they made fun of my growing assets which seemed to be accentuated by the two squares on each side of the central iron on. I ended up walking home from our sleepover very ticked off one evening - but no worries, we are all still best friends to this day). I also did a major 8th grade presentation and report on astrology (I got an A).

Here are the alleged new dates. Did yours change?

Capricorn: Jan. 20-Feb. 16.
Aquarius: Feb. 16-March 11.
Pisces: March 11-April 18.
Aries: April 18-May 13.
Taurus: May 13-June 21.
Gemini: June 21-July 20.
Cancer: July 20-Aug. 10.
Leo: Aug. 10-Sept. 16.
Virgo: Sept. 16-Oct. 30.
Libra: Oct. 30-Nov. 23.
Scorpio: Nov. 23-29.
Ophiuchus: Nov. 29-Dec. 17.
Sagittarius: Dec. 17-Jan. 20.

So needless to say, I am interested in this new development. According to the new calendar, I am no longer a Cancer, but a Gemini. I seriously have a Cancer the crab Christmas ornament (I also bought my two besties a zodiac ornament as well) and two tshirts with the sign of the Crab on them. Do I need to donate them now? I also realized that all three of my children are now Leos. Should be get a pet lion? What about the poor blokes who have zodiac tattoos?! Now do I have to change my main character's sign in my manuscript? She was a Capricorn!

National and local news media are reporting about this new change, but Dailyhoroscope.com reports that it's hogwash.

What do you think about these reports? Me? I'm happy to remain a Cancer the crab. My "new" sign, Gemini says I'm adaptable. Apparently I don't want to adapt to my new sign. But does it really matter? No, I'm not going to lose sleep over this, but I am intrigued.

Did your sign change? What are your thoughts?

I changed from a cancer to a gemini too! I don't really care. I never gave much thought to the signs. It's strange they did that though.

I've not been much into "horrorscopes" either. That said, I've always been and will always be a Cancer. Soft and vulnerable on the inside, hard shelled on the outside. I'm not a Gemini, no split personality here.

I'm an on the cusp Gemini/Cancer. But now, I'm apparently a full-blown Gemini. I still feel more like a Cancer, though.

I read an article somewhere that said our signs aren't actually changing, though...hrmm...this is all too confusing!

Kelly said...

Bish and Laura - Whoa! That makes three of us changing from a Cancer to a Gemini. But I will always stay be the Crab. ;)

Kelly said...

Meika - And now four!!! Crazy! And yes, it is a bit confusing....

Uh, how did I change as a human being? Seriously, does this mean my personality has to be different now? What??? I will always be a Virgo, darn it! I'm not a LEO!!!

Marisa Hopkins said...

Oh, I read that the changes are only for peeps born 2009 and after, so we're all the same as before?

Which is good if that is true, because I am SO seriously an Aquarius, and SO seriously NOT a Capricorn!!!

also, your title made me snicker. I actually SNICKERED. Now I am hungry for a snicker of a different kind...

Kelly said...

Carol - My two Virgo boys turned into Leos too!
Marisa - I didn't read that, but that kind of makes more sense. I hope that is what is true...

I'm a cancer too! I think I have some of the stereotypical traits. i'm especially very home oriented and would rather spend a day home with the fam than out and about.

Read both sides--so who's RIGHT?? I need to know, darn-it! It's crucial to my life! :-0 Taurus foreva!!!

This is so interesting. I've always been mildly entertained by horoscopes and the zodiac. According to the chart, I've gone from Libra to Virgo, but I'm a true Libra. Hmmm.

Samantha VĂ©rant said...

Apparently there are two Zodiacs-- eastern and western. We follow the Western (or so they say, whoever "they are) so nothing has changed. You're still a crab!

Melissa Gill said...

Oh my, I guess it makes sense that since there are technically 13 moon cycles there would be 13 zodiac signs, but I'm like you. I always thought of myself as a Cancer too. This would make me a Gemini. It seems to discredit the whole idea if you can change from one sign to another like that.

Alex J. Cavanaugh said...

I'm now a WHAT? Now that's just dumb.

Lydia K said...

Strange. I don't really believe in horoscopes, but I am (was) a Libra and the sign strangely fit my personality to a T.
Now I'm a Virgo.
And I'm pissed!

I totally missed this in the news until my sister just came over and told me about it and then now your blog. I love your take on it. The realization about the tattoos was hilarious!

I went from a Taurus to an Aries. I'm not going for it. If I'm lucky enough to live to be 100 I will still tell people I'm a Taurus.

My husband was passionate Scorpio and now he's a balancing act of a Libra? I don't think so! haha!

I really love astrology. There are a lot of factors that make up our personalities and who we get along with in the zodiac. It depends on the hour, what moon phase the sign was in and so much more.

Luckily my kids didn't change at all. I didn't want to have to get to know them all over again.

Great post!

I was an Aries, but this makes me a Pisces. I can't think how the two of those are similar and I still feel like an Aries. Did they take into accound the shift in the stars since the zodiac was first used? (I saw some science show about that.) Because that would put me back into Aries. :)

You've gotta be effing kidding me! I changed from a Gemini to a Taurus. Ticks me off.

Katie - Me, too. I like to go out now and then, but I'd rather be home than anywhere else.
Christina - Yes, I'm intrigued to see where this topic is going.
Cynthia- I think many of us do identify with our original sign, which makes this all the more intriguing.
Sam - I wonder what all the fuss is about if it's just Western or Eastern, asks the Crab.
Melissa - It does seem too strange. I'm sure we'll hear more about it in the next month.

Kelly said...

Alex - Yeah, I'm starting to think it's silly! I'd like more info about it though..
Lydia - It's funny how even though many don't really read horoscopes, they do seem attached to their sign.
Patricia - My daughter didn't change either, which is funny, because she really is a true Leo!
Carolyn - I'm not sure, but I do think more people will delve into this topic to see what is "right".
Anita - Spoken like a true Gemini. :)

Crap--I guess I'm no longer a Cancer anymore. Bummer. :)

Supposedly, I'm now a Cancer, instead of a Leo. I don't think so. I'm a little bossy and that's okay.

The Happy Whisk said...

Mine changed according to this hogwash, but I'm not playing by their rules. My old sign stays.

Wendy aka Quillfeather said...

I agree with Alex. That's just dumb.

For me, I remain a Capricorn thankfully. Stubborn as a goat too.

Nora MacFarlane said...

Whew! I'm safe. Still an Aries.

Jonathon Arntson said...

I'm still a lovable Leo!

rawr.

I've changed from a Leo to a Cancer! I was close to the cusp and always thought I had as many Cancer characteristics as Leo, but this is still weird!!! :)

Christian James said...

What an interesting post, I knew nothing about this, though my star sign has not changed, the main author of our blog, Dempsey's, has changed from a Sagitarius to the new star sign, and he was very intrigued when i told him.
Really enjoyed reading this post, thank you

So weird. Why are there only 6 days of Scorpio? What does that even mean?

And I am not a Virgo....really.

Heather - I was bummed too. I like being a Cancer. And I refuse to change!
Denise - You? Bossy?
Happy - Agreed.
Wendy - It's a bit silly. And it's getting so much attention!
Nora - Lucky you that yours isn't changed!
Jon - Lovable indeed!
Jemi - I agree, weird. But interesting that you are on the cusp and share characteristics!
Christian - Thanks for coming by!!
Shelley - Yes, weird that some spans are different than others. Probably hogwash.

Oh, Man! The people with zodiac tattoos! I completely forgot about them. That would be um, awkward.
Glad you're spreading the word,
Namaste,

Whoa. This makes me a Cancer instead of a Leo. How can they do this? I AM a Leo!!

Ishta Mercurio said...

I was a Taurus, and am supposedly now an Aries - except that I'm TOTALLY a Taurus! Stubborn, down to earth, stubborn...

I think this is an example of horoscopes, like names, being self-fulfilling prophecies. I grew up knowing that I was a Taurus, with other people knowing that I am a Taurus, and those are the traits that I developed, probably in part because that's what I (and others) expected of me. Once a Taurus, always a Taurus.

I love Astrology because it's so easy to debunk and teach my students critical thinking. I cut out the daily astrology stuff for a week, cut off the names of which sign it is and code each one with a letter on the back of index cards randomly so no one knows which goes with what sign. Then the kids shuffle through them and pick the ones they think really go with them. Then we match up the letters and signs and...no one ever picks their own sign! (Surprise!) We do this for a week and by the end of the week "astrology" = "joke" to everyone in class. Yea, critical thinking!

I think people that "buy" it really get into examining their personality and would probably get more out of Meyers-Briggs and other personality test stuff...

Well I guess my sign changed from Aries to Pisces, but I have no idea what that means. I don't think it makes much difference what they call it cause it's all made up anyway, right?

Debbie Diesen said...

Was a Virgo; still am a Virgo. And though I don't put any stock in horoscopes, I'm pleased that I didn't change signs: Virgos don't like change! :)

Hi, Kelly

What this is, actually, is a load of bunk. I used play around with astrology in my (much) younger days, and they tried to push Ophiuchus back then, too.

The truth is, Ophiuchus has been part of the zodiac in a strictly astronomical sense pretty since people started naming constellations 1000's of years ago.

The zodiac, physically, are the constellations that pass through the ecliptic, the imaginary line the sun, moon, and all the planets appear to travel as viewed from earth.

I won't waste space with the technical explanation, but due to peculiarities in the earth's rotation, the placement of the astrological zodiac and the astronomical zodiac are not quite the same. But this has been true for centuries.

Astrologers use the astrological zodiac, have used it, and will use it. Nothing has changed. Your sign is your sign.

This is nothing more than a scientist deliberately giving out misinformation.

Sorry I took up so much space; here's a good article. if you want more info.
